Convertible Selection Tips
#1 – Get white seats if you can, or at least the lightest beige or gray or tan that you can find. You can always identify someone who has no clue, because they park a convertible in the sun with black seats and then enjoy doing the third degree burn squirm when they try to sit down on the seats! The best situation is when a car has light colored seats but charcoal gray or black carpet, because then you have the best of both worlds — cool seats and carpet you don’t have to worry about dirt or staining with.
#2- If you have kids, don’t “kid” yourself, you need a four-seater. All convertibles from the modern era are smaller than they should be. If enjoying the sunshine and fresh air is your thing, make sure you have enough seats to take the kiddies out for ice cream. In many parts of the country, there are times when it is so hot out during the day, you will enjoy the car most in the evening. So make sure you have enough seats for the nighttime “cruise”. I live in Chicago so it is always fun to see how many days elapse between when it is too cold to put the top down, and when it is then too hot to keep the top down!!
#3 – Keep in mind, sometimes you can rent convertibles from car rental companies. This is a great way to try out specific models, and the lifestyle altogether. If you rent a convertible on a business trip or family vacation and you fell like crying your eyes out when you’re walking away from it at the rental drop-off, this is your sign!
